A friend of mine sent me a link to this site this morning and I thought I would share it. Earth Hour 2008 is an initiative to get people to turn off their lights for one hour on March 29, 2008 as a show of solidarity and to send a message that people are taking the issue of climate change seriously.
If you are one of the many people that want to see this issue get more serious attention, then sign up and participate. It's one hour, but that hour can send a very powerful message.

Interesting take on the Detroit Auto Show |

This article from Brandweek (an Advertising & Marketing industry newspaper) has an interesting take on last week's Detroit Auto Show and points to continued ambivalence toward the environment from some of the top automakers. Here's a great clip from the article with Anne Belec, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America:
“But what’s green? Hybrids represent 6% of the cars on the road . . . but the number of people buying these are minute.” This year, Volvo will focus its marketing on its larger vehicles, including the V70 wagon, the XC70 Cross Country and the XC90, said Belec. “That’s where the higher profit margins are.”
I've never been a big fan of Volvo, but I'm even less of one ...

Facebook Green Graffiti Contest |

The site ReGeneration (sponsored by Dell) held a contest last week and encouraged Facebook members to submit digital graffiti that embodies their vision of what it means to be 'green.' They had an incredible response and decided to extend the contest a few days. This is a great sign that younger people are paying much more attention to environmental issues. It's also good to see a company like Dell engaging on this key issue.

It seems like across the world, people and nations are waking up the sobering reality of climate change, skyrocketing fuel costs, dwindling fossil fuel reserves, and the political tensions that are compounding as a result of all of these issues. Time Magazine published an article about Israel looking to Electric Cars as a serious alternative to the existing transportation model based on fossil fuels. Interestingly, their approach focuses on the infrastructure component, and not the vehicles themselves. They are looking at recharging stations, and also battery swapping stations. This is an interesting twist in the discussion. One of the biggest challenges for 100% electric cars has been the range you can get on a charge. The Detroit Auto Show is underway, and all kinds of alternative fueled vehicles are being discussed. It's about time! Let's hope this time they actually build the cars and keep them on the road! It does look like Toyota will lead the pack in actually getting more fuel efficient cars to market the quickest. They are promising a plug-in Prius Hybrid, which has been widely sought for many years now.
Check out the variety of alternative fueled cars by Saturn, Mercedes, Jeep, Chrysler, Cadillac, and many others in the New York Times coverage of the Auto Show.
As great as the news is, I'm still a little bitter that there aren't more options available to purchase NOW! I need ...

 Last night I watched the movie 'Who Killed the Electric Car' on cable and was totally blown away! I can't believe I had not heard about it before. It's one of those films that when you watch it, you can't believe that these things happen. Anyone who is interested in alternative fuels for vehicles should watch this movie. Actually, I think it should be required for every American to watch it. Perhaps it should be required in High School Government classes. That way, our future leaders will have a sense of the damage that has been done by past generations and perhaps they will get ...

Petition to stop Arctic Drilling & protect Polar Bear habitat |

Polar Bears have been getting a lot of attention recently due to the fact that for the first time in history, there could be a species placed on the Endangered Species list prior to the population actually dropping to a critical low. The reason is because the habitat of the Polar Bear is disappearing due to global warming. They rely on the Arctic ice to hunt for food. Now that the ice is melting, they have fewer places to find food and face extreme challenges to just to survive.
Just recently, the Interior Department has opened up an area of the Polar Bear's habitat in Alaska for oil drilling. This is just one more obstacle for the continued survival of this magnificent species. Check out the Sierra Club's initiative to block this drilling here.
Enough is enough! Continued oil exploration in a fragile climat ...

CAFE Standards Increased - FINALLY! |

More than 30 years after the original CAFE standards were set for fuel economy, the US Congress passed and the President signed an energy bill that increases the standards to 35mpg by 2020. It's hard to believe that it took this long to get our fuel economy standards raised by the government, but nonetheless it finally happened. This should be the first step of many more to come that drastically increase fuel economy in the coming years.
Unfortunately, many of the initiatives to fund alternative fuel research were stripped from the bill. Perhaps in coming years (hopefully sooner than later), that will change. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing what models are introduced. We already know the technology exists - we just haven't seen it in the US market yet.
